Littlestuff Weekender-4-28-2012

Here’s a shocker for the weekend. Europe and its union are in trouble. Political discontent, fiscal crises and economic woes from The Netherlands in the north to Spain in the south and the Czechs in the east plus major disagreements in Germany all add up to turmoil and increasing fragility. Unfortunately the best word picture that I can suggest is the ever popular “whack-a-mole” as issue after issue pops up and demands immediate action. So…anyone know how Monaco is doing these days? It must be a tiny haven of sanity in the midst of all this chaos. Then again, perhaps not.

Here in NW Ohio we are experiencing some “payback’ for our balmy March as we have some chilly days and nights interspersed with more typical April weather. The inconsistent temps have caused me to delay much of my transplanting as I wait for the danger of frost to dissipate and soil temperatures to maintain levels above 55 degrees.

So it appears Romney has locked up the nomination according to him, the media and most pundits. The Ron Paul stalwarts caution “not so fast” as they continue to harvest the fields for committed delegates. The best analyses that I have read indicate that RP could indeed finish second in the race and secure major platform and convention concessions. Despite the internal activities of the GOP, it seems that Obama and Romney have begun squaring off against one another. Romney’s vetting process for VP has begun and the early money is on Senator Marco Rubio (Fla.) or Senator Rob Portmann (Ohio). Don’t overlook governors from key states, but a senator would offset Romney’s lack of experience on Capitol Hill.

On Friday I’ll be leaving for a convention in Las Vegas and later in the month we’ll be off to Orlando for a few days. I also have several medical tests scheduled for this coming month (250,000 mile check-ups), and the outdoor work will be accelerating. Consequently, I will not be posting on my regular schedule until around June 8^th although I will add something from time-to-time when I can.

Kudos to Ohio State Representative Randy Gardner who has begun a state-oriented effort to correct the invasive species issues with Lake Erie. He rightly observed that we DO NOT want the federal EPA involved. Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has called for a federal ban on cell phone use in automobiles. He’s a former Republican Congressman from Illinois….would someone please read the 9^th and 10^th Amendments to him? Geeeeesh!

Littlestuff Weekender-4-14-2012

There are a number of “Tax Day” rallies going on around the fruited plain in the next few days, and I am honored to be speaking at the Perrysburg Patriots’ rally in Perrysburg, Ohio (Hood Park, 105 Front St. 12:00noon-2:00pm) today (Saturday). If you have one nearby, please try to go. Some pundits are gleefully predicting the demise of the Tea Party movement, and the time has come to change their perceptions.

Every day next week I’ll be subbing for Brian Wilson from 3:00-6:00pm on The Talk of Toledo, 1370 WSPD. ( www.wspd.com ) I’m honored to fill his seat and his shoes on the number 1 talk station in the greater Toledo market. We plan to have a number of interesting guests, a daily chance to win a prize and perhaps some of my sermonizing about liberty. On Thursday after the show, I’ll travel to Findlay to speak to the Findlay/Hancock County 9.12 Project. Sharon Butler graciously invited me, and I look forward to returning to my old haunts in the Flag City. The program begins at 6:30pm in the 3^rd floor meeting room of the Findlay Municipal Hall.  

The economic situation in Europe has shifted but not substantially changed. Spain is facing a similar situation to that of Greece. Italy and Portugal are hot on the heels of Spain and Germany’s debt to GDP ratio is now around 80%. Germany….the economic pillar of Europe is in danger of facing fiscal peril because it has been financing EU profligacy.

Meanwhile the hyper-growing Chinese economy is showing some signs of slowing because the government wants to quell inflationary pressure and also because the European and U.S. markets aren’t purchasing as many Chinese products as before. The entire global economy reminds me of the circus act where the guy balances multiple spinning plates on sticks and attempts to keep them all spinning and balancing at once. If things don’t work out just right, there could be lots of shattered pottery all over the planet.

Politically…it looks like Romney’s election to lose, and he may. Be prepared for massive voter fraud across the nation and a Department of Justice that looks the other way. Romney will have to bring his “A” game (if he has one) otherwise there may be significant leakage to the Libertarians or many GOP voters may stay at home on Election Day. You may have read or heard that the national vote tally for President will be tabulated by a Spanish company. This is the first time ever that one company has combined all the states and territories for tabulating. … an offshore one at that. Why aren’t the labor unions complaining about Obama shipping jobs to a foreign country?

This past week I read a column about the performance of the freshman House members who were elected as “Tea Party Republicans.” Already nearly 75% of them have migrated to the big-spending, big-government dark side. There appears to be a solid core of about 20-22 House members who seem to get it. That’s not nearly enough. They need help or they will burn out by giving in….or choosing not to run again. An “R” behind one’s name is no guarantee of fiscal sanity. Tea Party groups should recruit, educate and groom political “virgins.” Selecting candidates from a pool of officeholders leads to promoting career politicians….with emphasis on the career. We end up with more of the same.

Ponder this for a second or two: This year the 16^th Amendment is 99 years old. That’s enough. We should move to eliminate it and send the 17^th Amendment with it to the ash heap of history. I believe that 1913 was the most destructive year in our nation’s history. Those two noxious amendments plus the creation of the Federal Reserve were just three of the products of that fateful year.

On one of my recent radio shows I spoke about an article wherein the author did an analysis of our national debt using the accrual method rather than the cash basis that is usually given. The difference, for example, is that on the cash accounting system the $1000 per month for a Social security recipient is factored into the debt for this year only whereas under the accrual method, we would factor the $1000 per month for the expected lifetime of the recipient. Please note….people who have not yet begun to receive benefits are NOT included….only current recipients are. Those who haven’t started receiving benefits are factored in the unfunded obligations of “out years.” Bottom line is that for those ALREADY RECEIVING benefits, the accrued debt exceeds $50 Trillion….yes, that’s right….50 Trillion dollars. Sorry ‘bout that. Now have a nice weekend.

In my view the Thursday night debate on Fox was one of the better ones. There appeared to be no major gaffes, and Michele Bachmann took no prisoners. Each of the candidates seemed to have ample time for presenting their cases to the people, and the Fox panel did a good job by avoiding typical liberal gotcha questions. Up until this point most of the candidates were nearly indistinguishable from one another on domestic policy. The Thursday night contest created some space and differences among them. There are probably two main reasons for their more definitive roles: a better quality of questioning and more debate maturity as candidates.

In case you missed it, the College Football Bowl season starts today (Sat.) with three “can’t miss” games. Temple plays Wyoming in the all-powerful New Mexico Bowl, Ohio University tackles Utah State in the ever-popular Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, and Louisiana-Lafayette battles San Diego State in the New Orleans Bowl. Only 32 more bowls to go and many of them are just as memorable as these stellar representatives. For example…mark your calendar for the Tuesday night contest at the Beef “O” Brady’s Bowl featuring gridiron powerhouses Florida International and Marshall. Yawn…….

If you need a warm-up for the Wednesday night Poinsettia Bowl between Louisiana Tech and TCU (Texas Christian), join me on 1370 WSPD at 6:00pm to 7:00pm ( www.wspd.com). I’ll have an exclusive interview with Santa Claus that I assure you will not be replicated anywhere. Although the discussion will not be profane or obscene, it is suggested that tiny tots not listen because their respect and love for the jolly elf could be severely unraveled. I can see the Thursday National Enquirer headline in my mind, “Santa tells all to Toledo radio host.” It could be ugly. It may even be humorous….hopefully.

Our holiday season officially begins today (Sat.) as my Mother is hosting my wing of the family. Looking forward to seeing my little Sis and little Bro’ and their respective spouses and children….and grandchildren. Food will be abundant and a lot of “catch-up’ talk will occur. Next week except for a lunch meeting on Wednesday and the radio show that evening is still somewhat of an undetermined blur. I guess I’ll do what I usually do….wait on Pat and the kids to tell me what’s going on. Dad or Grandpa is always the last to know. Over the years I have learned to stop complaining (usually), shrug my shoulders and go along with the plans of the others. There’s less friction and angst that way, but I believe they know that if I object…..they’ll allow me to do it my way (cue Frank Sinatra). Of course I’m dreaming.

Once again the headlines predict the fiscal collapse of Europe ( and us because of our massive entanglements). Once again they have TEMPORARILY postponed the inevitable. My question is probably rhetorical: Don’t they understand that by prolonging the resolution of the problem, they are making it worse? Of course they do, but they’re trying to hold off the collapse until they can clearly identify someone or something to blame. The only aspect of this mess that is worse than their incessant can kicking is their rabid lust for blame shifting. Politicians….socialists, Republicans, Democrats, communists, despots and tyrants …. are all alike….grab power, assume control, screw up and blame someone else. It’s a putrid perverse pattern of predictable political perfidy. And it “pees” me off.

This must be Groundhog Day (Fri.). I just heard on the radio that Congress has passed another short-term trillion dollar package so the government will remain open. This government will NEVER CLOSE. We can’t get rid of the darn overgrown over-controlling mess. It just keeps getting larger and more costly. And our representatives at the D.C. Clown College were afraid it would “shut down.” Hell, we should be so lucky. Government is more enduring than zucchini and less reliable than wind. Three years since the last budget… which means there is no plan in place for them to violate and ignore. Just wait ‘til they have your health and well-being in their slick oily hands.

Tonight I will complete Throw Them All Out by Peter Schweizer. It’s a detailed analysis of how OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES become wealthy through using insider knowledge that is perfectly legal for them and prison time for us. Double standards abound in Washington and our other capitols. The greatest problem is that double standards are the only standards for our unethical elitist political class. They have no standards….no principles….no integrity…no shame. They believe they are entitled. Their actions make our 47% non-contributors look like pikers. They are giving “sleaze” a bad name. The title of the book says it. Now we must do it.

Have a special weekend. Save your Walgreen and CVS coupons so you can go wild with gift shopping. Sit for a moment, enjoy a cup of whatever and thank Him for your blessings. Do it fast before the government outlaws blessings.
