Antidote to Anarchy

As a libertarian, I am familiar with the oft-stated complaint that my views represent a yearning for anarchy. If the critics are suggesting that I wish to reduce government’s role to a very minimalist level or to limit the federal leviathan to its enumerated constitutional functions, then I plead “guilty.” I do so with vigor and glee. If those same critics believe that self-determination is the equivalent of social anarchy, I say “bring it on.” I do not fancy myself a fool who has been compromised by some misguided dream of Walden Pond. No, I am a wounded realist who has witnessed the oppressive growth of government and its suffocating nature. I have been battered and beaten by too many “good ideas” initiated by others who believe that I am incapable of making life-affirming choices.

My over-extended line of reasoning has led me to conclude that if I err and do not harm or damage others’ lives or property, then I must suffer and recover from the consequences of my faulty decision-making. If government assumes the power to choose for me and missteps, the entire nation….or a significant portion of it…will be harmed. Suffice it to say that I respect you and your preferences too much to want you to be damaged on my behalf. In other words… self-reliance, self-determination and individual sovereignty are the ultimate expressions of concern for others and their well-being. If my stupidity or naiveté lead me to the pits, why should you be forced to share my misery and pain? For those of the Christian faith…. Christ took the sins of humankind to the cross so that we could be spared eternal estrangement from Father. While each of us has his own cross to bear, we are not forced to endure that agonizing reconciliation for all.

The individualistic impulse is imprinted into our very nature. We seek to forge our own pathways and follow our personal compasses. We want to be free, but… at the same time some of us seek to escape the consequences of our frivolity and foolishness. There are those among us who believe that our better natures can be molded and manipulated into paragons of passivity leading to a level of hum-drum happiness and contentment. Perhaps … but not for all of us. If a significant number of us seek the succor and sustenance of government, it must by its twisted mission, force all of us to comply with its mendacious mandates. The lies of big government deceive us by luring us into a false security. Its enveloping arms of comfort become restrictive bands of tyranny. Those of us who long for liberty are compelled to resist by whatever means available. Resistance is messy. Reaction to resistance can ratchet the conflict upward and into chaos. Suppression and oppression often yield anarchy when the smoke has cleared.

The greatest antidote for anarchy is freedom. A free people have no compulsion to dismantle the infrastructure of the state. Their liberty and the government’s limitations provide an environment for prosperity and personal development. As our Framers envisioned it, one of the primary obligations of the federal government is to protect and defend the individual liberties of the nation’s citizens. The wise and learned crafters of our republic understood that liberty cannot be constrained for extended periods because the people will either cease production or openly rebel. A free people have no need to resist or subvert the government. When a government illegitimately over burdens its people with a bevy of laws, rules and regulations that are designed to constrict their individual opportunities for self-fulfillment, the citizens or a surly portion of them will vigorously react.

Because tyrannical regimes restrict the means and the resources for people to mount a resistance movement, the anti-government liberty effort will necessarily be ragtag and disjointed. If the citizenry successfully dislodges the offending government, the resultant outcome will lead to a number of liberty-minded groups vying to install their respective versions of a free and wholesome society. Under such a scenario there are two overwhelmingly likely end games. One is that a new round of repression would ensue in order for the victors to solidify their gains. The other is that the leadership and organizational structure of the successful groups would be quite diffuse and disorganized resulting in broad based anarchy across the land. The challenge would be for each region to design and re-establish some element of government and order that honors the freedom of its residents. Fortunately there is an excellent model from the late Eighteenth Century that has been enhanced by two and a quarter centuries of experience.

In essence an oppressive government is one that forcefully and unnecessarily squeezes a tube of toothpaste. If its tyrannical behavior incites an insurrection, it remains for the survivors to place the product back into the tube.

Olfactory Identification

Undoubtedly you are familiar with the canine greeting dance involving frenzied anal sniffing. Even when encountering other dogs with whom they’ve played in the past, the pups will vigorously sniff and snort one another to positively identify each other. Obviously their method is much more effective than any “Voter I.D.” implemented by government (are you thinking what I’m thinking? Maybe it would work at the polls. What scares me is the type of volunteer we might attract). Nevertheless, olfactory identification is an extremely useful tool for humans…..particularly those of us who have become cynical, skeptical or jaded by government mismanagement, misfeasance, malfeasance and massiveness. If it “stinks to high heaven,” it is not a good thing for us.

We hear a politician’s voice or look into her or his eyes seeking a glimmer of integrity. In the tiny recesses of their feeble minds they see us as kissing their ample arses as we humbly beg for crumbs from Big Brother’s table. They have a point. Just as our friendly canine critters have a fool-proof system for discerning friend from foe, as we stoop to smooch their beneficent behinds, we should inhale deeply so as to detect their true natures. I suspect that if we peer closely as we engage in our olfactory exercise, we may see a head….the politician’s head…firmly lodged in the anal cavity. Hey…I understand that this is a ludicrous metaphor for the way things are, but once in a while I must deviate from the concrete….the cold harsh reality of the tyranny of Big Government. Perhaps I’m overly sensitive regarding expansive government power and its increasing misapplication, but it seems to me that it has grow exponentially in recent years.

Government power and abuse is not an onion (sorry, another metaphor). It cannot be peeled back or removed incrementally. The malignant power permeates every bureau, every directorate and every department. The courts play along in the corruption of liberty game by relying on precedent for justifying the preeminence of the state. As a result, the power continues to grow and individuals’ abilities to affect the process are drastically diminished. Peeling the onion cannot be accomplished quickly enough to rectify the harm …..  it will merely cause us to cry. I know. This whole thing stinks. That’s why I chose “Man’s Best (earthly) Friend” as the symbol of the metaphor.

Our governments at all levels have exceeded their purposes. They have transformed from the servants to the masters of the people. I wish that I could confidently assert that we can turn this monstrosity around, but I fear that the choking tendrils of government have permeated and poisoned every level of our social and political structure. It is imperative, therefore, if we are to survive in this milieu, that we engage all of our senses. If we have any hope of turning this situation around, we must place our senses on “hyper-alert.”

We must see through our career politicians. We cannot, we dare not take them at face value. We must be suspicious and discerning.

We must hear the words of government and politicians, but consciously pursue the unspoken and unsaid facts that they insist on withholding. We must listen carefully for the small still voices that join our pleas for freedom.

We must reach out and touch those who are unaware or unwilling to recognize our present circumstances. We must handle the truth with tender care and crush deceit whenever we encounter it.

We must learn our history and recharge our memories to recapture the divine sweet taste of liberty. We must transmit its flavor to everyone we know and those we meet.

We must use the smell test whenever we encounter an advocate for government. The sweet scent of freedom must not be covered by the odor of tyranny. The joyful aroma of liberty cannot be overcome by the stench of despotism.

We must engage all our senses all the time because nearly everything that government does fails to pass the “smell test.”

Littlestuff Weekender-1-21-2012

South Carolinians are voting in the primaries today (Saturday). If the most recent polls are correct, Newt Gingrich should eke out a victory. This development would mean that Santorum narrowly wins Iowa, Romney cruises in New Hampshire and Gingrich nails the first Southern contest. Delegate apportionment is all over the map, but it appears that Ron Paul will be hanging in there in second place with committed delegates. Newt’s victory (if it occurs) would suggest that Republicans of South Carolina detest the main stream media more than they loathe marital infidelity. Newt’s response to CNN’s John King’s opening question in the Thursday night debate seems to have catapulted him into a true contender despite the allegations from his former wife, Marrianne. The situation, as they say, is fluid. The steady one is Dr. Paul which is reflective of his consistency and reliability. Santorum is having difficulty gaining traction and Romney often appears to be weak and indecisive. Stay tuned. Florida is next.

While most political watchers were focused on the goings-on in South Carolina, the Congress and the Executive Branch absconded with more of your liberty and increased our national indebtedness. Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary for HHS, RULED that all private health insurance plans MUST include certain contraceptive aids with NO co-pay for everyone in the plan….regardless of gender or moral and religious objections. The dictate is not only offensive, but it will make the private plans more costly for everyone….companies and insured. If I were cynical ( and I am), I would think this is a blatant attempt to put financial pressure on private insurers and companies thus increasing the likelihood that they might prefer a government insurance plan in the future.

Public outcry and reactions forced the tabling of the SOPA legislation in the House. Supporters of the over-reaching effort to protect copyrights and intellectual property admitted that there were some vaguely written portions of the bill that could allow bureaucrats a broad area for engaging in 1st Amendment mischief. The bill was shelved…..for now. Be prepared because it will probably reappear as an obscure amendment to an appropriations bill sometime in the near future. Statists of the two old parties do not give up in their efforts to exercise control over us. They merely postpone the most egregious efforts until our interests are focused elsewhere.

The anti-human, anti-progress progressives won a small victory when President Obama delayed his decision about the Keystone Pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast because of “environmental concerns.” Actually….as he often does, he blamed the delay on someone else….his own Department of State…because of the international aspect of the pipeline’s crossing our border with Canada. Trans-Canadian, the company that is developing the pipe line announced that they were trumping the Socialist-in-Chief by constructing a domestic line from the Dakotas to the Gulf thus avoiding for now the international aspects. I’ll wager the federal government and its Marxist leader will devise, create, make-up or discover another compelling reason for refusing to allow more private sector jobs and energy independence. I do not recall ever witnessing such a collection of anal orifices in our country in my lifetime. We’ve always had them lurking around trying to undermine liberty and increase government power, but it seems as if they have metastasized almost beyond treatment. Radical surgery appears to be our last best hope. Electing another statist with a slower-moving agenda will not do, we need a surgeon who’s capable, consistent and committed to the task of putting the monster back into its cage.

If any of the candidates for President says they would have signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), they should immediately be dismissed as a serious contender for the office. Their answer indicates one of two things: they see no problem with the military detaining U.S. citizens without trial or habeas corpus rights….which makes them an enemy of the Constitution of the United States and an adversary of freedom; or they are too stupid, ignorant and clueless to serve. Why anyone….let alone a serious candidate for Chief Executive…would endorse increasing the power of the Federal Government at this time is beyond comprehension for any person with reasonable cognitive ability.

Government is force (see Bastiat, The Law). Even in its most benign applications it represents an oppressive passive coercion. It may introduce legislation, rules or regulations that clearly violate the natural rights of individuals, but if the aggrieved parties lack the resources or the power to fight back, their liberties will be denied forever as the government moves on to the next unwitting victim. Promoting a larger footprint for government at any level suggests that one is either a masochist or a collectivist. Both maladies are evidence of sickness and must be exorcised and discarded. “Soft” tyranny always hardens as time moves on. Tyranny is deadly. It kills the spirit, the soul and the dreams of the people. It must be restricted and defeated every time it rears its ugly head. Liberty must prevail….first, foremost and forever!

Firewall for Freedom

Firewall: a barrier inside a building or vehicle, designed to limit the spread of fire, heat and structural collapse.
The time has come to build a firewall for freedom. Each day, every day some new action by our federal, state or local governments with the willing complicity of certain large corporate and banking interests generates some rule, law, regulation or constraint that limits our liberty. Our citizens and our freedom are under siege. We are surrounded by interests who seek to enhance their own power and diminish ours. If seems as if our foes are bold, and our allies are ineffective. We are facing a conflagration that is obsessed with consuming our rights and our lives. The oxygen that stokes the all-consuming fire is our indifference and our ignorance. The accelerant that increases the intensity of the flames is our propensity for looking to government for solutions.

Firewalls must fulfill three functions: external protection, internal limits and damage mediation. The ideal firewall will prevent corrosive outside forces from doing harm to our liberty and our nation. In my view, the external component has already been breached and the destruction has been underway for many decades. The charred remains of our Republic are standing but teetering. The internal function is designed to protect the elementary core of the nation from total destruction, but the flames of socialism are flickering dangerously close to our inner essence. Minimizing the damage appears to be the current mode for our liberty firewall as so many of our freedoms and rights have been abridged by overzealous governments at every level of our nation.

Our firewall has been weakened, and the heat is gaining intensity. To avoid having our Republic consumed by the flames we must step into the fire and rebuild the firewall. Clearly that effort has begun on many levels through the liberty, Tea Party and affiliated organizations. The educational programs they have undertaken have informed thousands about the history and advantages of a constitutional republic. The reach must be broader and deeper for rebuilding the wall because the numbers of people who wish to save the nation must be significant and effective.

Educating and motivating the voting electorate represents the outer layer of the firewall structure. This reconstruction has begun but needs to be dramatically expanded in order to be effective. The outer layer is the first line of defense when the attack comes. It must be equipped for slowing the pace and the intensity of the onslaught while the inner core and the final shield adjust to the oncoming assault. The inner core….similar in function and substance to the EPA/OSHA-dreaded asbestos….is built for a longer-lasting endurance in the face of high-powered attempts to bring down our constitutional republic. Our inner core will be solidly intact if we can train, educate and arm the next generation with knowledge about the Constitution, the Declaration and their purposes. It is absolutely vital for the survival of our republic for the next generation to be informed and prepared to defend liberty and life. Under the present circumstances I would define the “next generation” as those less 40 years of age.

If you were to attend a number of liberty groups or Tea Party-affiliated functions, you would note that the demographics tend toward older citizens. Obviously soccer matches, school events and hefty work obligations may limit the time available for middle-life activists in the restoration movement. Despite their shortage of time, our groups of activists must find a means for educating and informing this next generation of leaders and restorers. We cannot allow their cohort to remain uninformed and uninvolved because as our generation tires or expires the torch will not be advanced. Our outreach to them must require a minimal time investment and a maximum of information. No long, drawn out meetings absorbed with minutiae and minutes will hold their interest. The sessions geared for them and others must start promptly, load them with historical and political data, and end promptly … preferably 90 minutes or fewer. Another option is to provide them free dvd or cd learning opportunities, but if cost is an issue, a lending library could be established for the purpose. We must reach them and teach while working within their time and priority constraints.

The final wall of our firewall is the final wall. If the external wall and the core are functional, but the final wall is faulty, we will merely retard our demise….not stop it. The final wall is the group of young people who are 25 or younger….all the way to infants. Statists, socialists, communists and humanists have been having their way with our young people for several generations. We must recapture the educational initiative. Clearly the best path is through their parents, but if that route is unavailable, then a more direct approach is needed. Animated dvd’s could be produced (preferably in a serial) and distributed through fairs, festivals, scout troops and other youth groups. Perhaps a direct-mail campaign could be developed to get them into the area homes, or some time on local cable access channels might be available. Will we be accused of brainwashing the crumb crunchers and rug rats? Yes, so what? Lombardi said it ”Winning is the only thing.” Aside from their personal salvation, the best gift we can give our grandchildren is a love for liberty and the passion to promote it.  It is our duty to God, our progeny and our nation.

Gimmicks and Tricks

Sleight of hand is commonplace in the halls of government power. Our superior elites continuously dazzle us with their “now you see it, now you don’t” routine of promises and broken vows. The pathways of United States’ history is littered with the shards of broken trust as our political masters pledge to be responsible….and fail, fail again and again. The most glaring recent example is the so-called “Super Committee.” I’ve witnessed more integrity and intelligence tumbling out of the clown car at the circus than I’ve observed from this bunch of worn out hacks. Yet, Boehner, Reid, McConnell and Pelosi smilingly go through the motions, precisely following their scripts, alternately sharing their fears and their hopes about the ultimate package for preserving our republic for another day…..just one day. Why one day? Because they are so weak-kneed they cannot kick the can any further down the road.

Perhaps I should not be so cynical because they have given me another twenty-four hours to prepare for our national and the global economic meltdown. Yes, I should be thankful for small favors. It is difficult, however because the people who are now offering me band aids for our nation’s fiscal woes, are the identical folks who severed our limbs of prosperity and liberty. In those rare instances where they were not directly responsible for our ills, they were droolingly complicit and compliant. I am fed up with gimmicks and tricks. I am sick of lying clueless politicians who seek to enrich themselves at my expense. I am tired of career politicians who “speak the speak” and say nothing. I am nauseated by slick political operatives who are continually trying to fool me. I am radically pissed by bureaucrats who sit in their cubicles and make life-altering choices for me. I am furious with all the single-digit I.Q. clowns who believe they know what’s best for me.

The elegant simplicity of the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States of America has been dragged through a cesspool of avarice and incompetence by a political and bureaucratic class that has no class…no common sense…no true compassion…no integrity…no honor…no principles…and no self-discipline. They have taken the second greatest guide for enlightened self government in human history and transformed it into a meaningless relic. They have stolen our treasure, our time and our dreams. They have grabbed our liberty and traded it for their egomaniacal power trips. They are not satisfied. They continue to assault our freedom and tax us into poverty. They consistently pass huge incomprehensible pieces of legislation that overwhelm our businesses, our citizens and our futures. If our political class and their bureaucratic henchmen were living under strict Sharia law, their hands would be severed from their lying thieving bodies. If they were living under early U.S. frontier justice, their twitching bodies would be dangling from a massive oak tree. If they were living in Revolutionary times, they would be hauling tail to Canada or back to England. So why do WE tolerate them?

So far you’ve probably concluded that I’m angry with politicians and bureaucrats. My seething does not stop with them. I am outraged by a soft, weak, dependent American populace that has NO sense of self-reliance. Sometimes I suspect that Gumby’s DNA has infiltrated our national gene pool. No spines, no bones of integrity and no firm understanding about the mess we are facing. Even people who pride themselves on their knowledge of and devotion to the Constitution vote for and support the Boehners and the McConnells because……”they’re not as bad as Democrats.” Scarlet fever isn’t as bad as typhoid, but neither one fits into my cavalcade of hits. No, both parties are guilty of writing and passing omnibus bills that are loaded with hand grenades and turds to foul the lives our citizens. Both parties have shared power and collusion for 150 years as they have led us or driven us down the path toward tyranny and away from our constitutional liberties. Both parties have protected and elected perverts, thieves, liars, adulterers and egotistical megalomaniacs. We have witnessed a massive bipartisan screwing, and we are either too weak or too cowardly to challenge the status quo. Perhaps we are too ignorant or too stupid to understand that liberty is a gift from God and must be preserved and protected….even when it’s our “friends” who are wresting it from us.

Sadly, I’m beginning to suspect that we have gone beyond the point of “no return.” I shall continue to scream, plead and goad my fellows into action and counter-action, but I intend to implement some personal remedies for the chaos that I see. From this point forward I declare our small acreage, The Little Pat-Ch of Paradise, as a sovereign state…seceding from all other political jurisdictions that claim dominance over our property. We shall henceforth be known as the nation of Patch on the continent of Paradise. If you drive past our new little nation and witness a cluster of jackbooted S.W.A.T. officers assaulting our place, take joy in the fact that the empire-building nation has once again taken on a weak little country. If history is a guide, we can hold out for ten years and collect billions in aid. Sounds like a plan.
