Littlestuff Weekender-5-28-2011

This is Memorial Weekend. Monday is the day that has been designated as a time to honor fallen heroes. Even those military volunteers who perform the most menial and necessary tasks may find themselves at risk during conflict. Therefore, anyone who volunteers to serve our nation in the military is potentially a mortal casualty. Let’s remember those who fell. Let’s thank them and their loved ones for their answering the call. We know with certainty that the time for death will come to each of us, but we do not know when it will arrive. For our fallen heroes the time arrived too soon. They sacrificed not only their lives but their futures as well. Thank you.

The weather has been dangerous and funky through much of the nation. I’ve read that El Nino is the culprit….or it could be ALGORE. One major after effect here in the Midwest is that our corn and soybean planting has been dramatically delayed or the seedlings have been drowned. Because of the adverse weather, a large amount of corn acreage is being diverted to soybeans which have a shorter growing season. Add to the mix that corn is the primary source of U.S. ethanol, and we can expect higher corn prices which will dramatically increase feed prices for livestock, dairy and some poultry producers. In other words…we’ll have higher food prices…still…again.

Many of you know that I am a Libertarian. Following my 42 year relationship with the GOP, I decided to join a party that takes its commitment to Constitutional government seriously. If I had truly wanted a large, bloated, unwieldy, intrusive, and at times, oppressive government, I would have been a Democrat. My complaint with the Republicans was that they didn’t fight often and earnestly enough to contain the monstrous entity that we now have. The Ohio Senate just passed an election reform bill (SB 148) that made some necessary changes to Ohio’s extremely liberal election procedures. They failed, however, to adequately address the issue of ballot access for significant minor parties. Instead, they allowed the punitively restrictive ballot requirements of the past to remain in place. In essence, the Senators told the citizens of Ohio that you get two choices and only two from grossly similar parties when you cast your ballot. Dissenting principled voices will not be tolerated or heard. Way to go, GOP Senators, you’ve extended your monopoly for a time, and your time will come.

Our radio show on WSPD, 1370AM, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00pm is coming along quite well. Once per week we have a “Liberty Link” wherein we speak with a grassroots leader and get info about his/her organization. Our purpose is to inform our listeners about opportunities for getting involved in the movement to rein in our government. The shows can be streamed at www.wspd.com or podcasts are posted within a couple of days following the broadcast.

The four-year renewal for the Patriot Act passed the Senate. Senator Rand Paul tried to amend it to further protect gun owners’ rights, but was unsuccessful. He then attempted a filibuster, but it passed anyway. Safety and security are federal government responsibilities, but it worries me that the Patriot Act concedes entirely too much unaccountable power to the government and its agencies. I don’t want to be an alarmist, but if anyone in government ever decides that “Tea Partiers” and dissenters pose a risk to the government, our Constitutional protections may be ignored by agents and bureaucrats….and politicians. The government has been all too willing to amass more power and use it to tell us how to live our lives. They’ve proven that they can and will abuse that power. We must be wary.

The President had an interesting week as he proved time and again what a self-centered megalomaniac he is. I have no real concern about his mess up with the Queen’s toast. We did emphatically move to eliminate the monarchy from our shores on April 19, 1775. The foul up is an indicator of his indifference about the performance of his job. He is unworthy of the office and deserves to be defeated.

Have a very special weekend. We’ll have a new Littlestuff-minoosha on Monday.
