Gimmicks and Tricks

Sleight of hand is commonplace in the halls of government power. Our superior elites continuously dazzle us with their “now you see it, now you don’t” routine of promises and broken vows. The pathways of United States’ history is littered with the shards of broken trust as our political masters pledge to be responsible….and fail, fail again and again. The most glaring recent example is the so-called “Super Committee.” I’ve witnessed more integrity and intelligence tumbling out of the clown car at the circus than I’ve observed from this bunch of worn out hacks. Yet, Boehner, Reid, McConnell and Pelosi smilingly go through the motions, precisely following their scripts, alternately sharing their fears and their hopes about the ultimate package for preserving our republic for another day…..just one day. Why one day? Because they are so weak-kneed they cannot kick the can any further down the road.

Perhaps I should not be so cynical because they have given me another twenty-four hours to prepare for our national and the global economic meltdown. Yes, I should be thankful for small favors. It is difficult, however because the people who are now offering me band aids for our nation’s fiscal woes, are the identical folks who severed our limbs of prosperity and liberty. In those rare instances where they were not directly responsible for our ills, they were droolingly complicit and compliant. I am fed up with gimmicks and tricks. I am sick of lying clueless politicians who seek to enrich themselves at my expense. I am tired of career politicians who “speak the speak” and say nothing. I am nauseated by slick political operatives who are continually trying to fool me. I am radically pissed by bureaucrats who sit in their cubicles and make life-altering choices for me. I am furious with all the single-digit I.Q. clowns who believe they know what’s best for me.

The elegant simplicity of the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States of America has been dragged through a cesspool of avarice and incompetence by a political and bureaucratic class that has no class…no common sense…no true compassion…no integrity…no honor…no principles…and no self-discipline. They have taken the second greatest guide for enlightened self government in human history and transformed it into a meaningless relic. They have stolen our treasure, our time and our dreams. They have grabbed our liberty and traded it for their egomaniacal power trips. They are not satisfied. They continue to assault our freedom and tax us into poverty. They consistently pass huge incomprehensible pieces of legislation that overwhelm our businesses, our citizens and our futures. If our political class and their bureaucratic henchmen were living under strict Sharia law, their hands would be severed from their lying thieving bodies. If they were living under early U.S. frontier justice, their twitching bodies would be dangling from a massive oak tree. If they were living in Revolutionary times, they would be hauling tail to Canada or back to England. So why do WE tolerate them?

So far you’ve probably concluded that I’m angry with politicians and bureaucrats. My seething does not stop with them. I am outraged by a soft, weak, dependent American populace that has NO sense of self-reliance. Sometimes I suspect that Gumby’s DNA has infiltrated our national gene pool. No spines, no bones of integrity and no firm understanding about the mess we are facing. Even people who pride themselves on their knowledge of and devotion to the Constitution vote for and support the Boehners and the McConnells because……”they’re not as bad as Democrats.” Scarlet fever isn’t as bad as typhoid, but neither one fits into my cavalcade of hits. No, both parties are guilty of writing and passing omnibus bills that are loaded with hand grenades and turds to foul the lives our citizens. Both parties have shared power and collusion for 150 years as they have led us or driven us down the path toward tyranny and away from our constitutional liberties. Both parties have protected and elected perverts, thieves, liars, adulterers and egotistical megalomaniacs. We have witnessed a massive bipartisan screwing, and we are either too weak or too cowardly to challenge the status quo. Perhaps we are too ignorant or too stupid to understand that liberty is a gift from God and must be preserved and protected….even when it’s our “friends” who are wresting it from us.

Sadly, I’m beginning to suspect that we have gone beyond the point of “no return.” I shall continue to scream, plead and goad my fellows into action and counter-action, but I intend to implement some personal remedies for the chaos that I see. From this point forward I declare our small acreage, The Little Pat-Ch of Paradise, as a sovereign state…seceding from all other political jurisdictions that claim dominance over our property. We shall henceforth be known as the nation of Patch on the continent of Paradise. If you drive past our new little nation and witness a cluster of jackbooted S.W.A.T. officers assaulting our place, take joy in the fact that the empire-building nation has once again taken on a weak little country. If history is a guide, we can hold out for ten years and collect billions in aid. Sounds like a plan.

Littlestuff Weekender-2-5-2011

Continued from last Littlestuff Weekender: Article 1, Section 8.
To coin money, regulate the value thereof, and of foreign coin, and fix the standard of weights and measures;
To provide for the punishment of counterfeiting the securities and current coin of the United States;
To establish post offices and post roads;
To promote the progress of science and the useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries;
To constitute Tribunals inferior to the supreme court;
Over the next two Saturday’s we’ll complete the enumerated powers presentation, and then begin with some commentary about them.
We’ll be leaving at noon today for Flint, Michigan, where we’ll be the dinner speaker for the Michigan Libertarian Party’s LibertyFest. We’ll be staying overnight at the Gateway Center Holiday Inn, and will return to Ohio on Sunday for my sister and brother-in-law’s 40th wedding anniversary and some small time football game.
Next weekend (Thursday through Sunday) we’ll be in Washington, D.C. to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Hopefully we pick up some fertile information for future columns as well as developing some additional sources for info and insights.
Future column in the works include a Church and State analysis, an examination of police powers in the U.S. and how they are utilized, and an inspection of the 17th Amendment and its ramifications.
Yesterday we taped a segment for Randall Turner’s “Money in America” radio program that airs in New York, Pennsylvania and Nevada. You can pick up Randy’s show or podcasts at www.moneyinamerica.biz
Thanks to Randy Turner and Janis for allowing us the opportunity to discover one more outlet for freedom. As we move through these perilous times, solid financial stewardship is vital, and Randall Turner, M.B.A. provides information that is useful for all of us.
So, Mr. President and bodacious members of the Senate, what is it about “unconstitutional healthcare legislation” that you do not understand? Why do you continue to behave as if all systems were “go?” Why do you insist upon thwarting the will of the people? Why do you forge onward when 28 states have, in essence, told you to cease and desist? Why do you appear committed to goading the citizens of the United States? Why?
As many of you know, I was an active member of the GOP for 42 years. I switched to the Libertarian Party when I discovered that to rise to power in the Republican Party would require that I be neutered. Didn’t seem like a good trade for me, but apparently many others have chosen to sacrifice their jewels for a sip from the cup of political power. When in politics, Republicans sacrifice their cajones, and Democrats give away their brains. Explains a lot, doesn’t it.
Here on our little farmette, the Little Pat-Ch of Paradise, the John Deere has been working overtime as we move snow from near the buildings and the driveway. We have a bumper crop of the white stuff…and that’s enough for this year. The water table should be in good shape this year.
Let’s see, if Ohio would secede from the union, but would not be true to Constitutional principles, then Wood County could withdraw from the Buckeye State. But if Wood County failed to uphold the rights of individuals, then Middleton Township could step aside, and if the township trustees were derelict in their governance, then our Little Pat-Ch of Paradise would declare our independence and rename ourselves….the State of Confusion. Whatever works….
For those of you who are concerned about the impact of illegal immigration in Ohio, Julie Aldrich has a scheduled meeting with Ohio House Speaker, Bill Batchelder, on February 18th at 10:00am in Columbus. She needs to know how many plan to attend in order to arrange for the appropriately sized room. If you wish to go, please contact Julie at  julieaaldrich@aol.com .
Back on Monday. Enjoy the remainder of your weekend.

Unsuccessful Secession?

Secession as a strategy for states of the United States of America that resist imperial federal power has not been a successful maneuver for those who have attempted it. In the political context secession is the unilateral voluntary withdrawal from the federal compact. Actually, though, secession was successful in the short term for South Carolina and the other members of the Confederate States of America (CSA). It began to unravel as the numerical superiority and industrial advantages of the Union began to grind away the Confederacy. The secessionist movement was handicapped, too, because the abolitionists of the North used slavery as a rallying cry for inspiring the citizens and creating support for the war.

The secessionist argument was not only prevalent in the years leading up to the War Between the States, but had been on the burners, both front and back, since before the founding. For example, the slow process for endorsing the Constitution by the respective states is indicative that total membership or unanimity was not a given. If you recall, the first ten amendments (12 were proposed) were a product of some states’ hesitancy to enter the federation. They wanted stronger protection and a more emphatic confirmation for individual rights in the founding document. The clear evidence of the Framing Period is that the Constitution was a document that limited the federal government and provided for a contractual relationship among the various states to join together for those purposes expressly described in the Constitution. The federation was an alliance of convenience. The federal government would be given enough powers and resources to fulfill the functions that were defined for it. All other powers, duties and obligations were “reserved to the states, “or “retained by the people.”

It follows, therefore, that if all parties are legally and constitutionally executing their respective roles, a state may withdraw from the compact. Although the prospect of secession is not explicitly addressed, neither is any penalty contemplated for those states that may choose to suspend their involvement in the federation. The sections of Article I of the Constitution describe some prohibitions for states. Also, Article IV provides a more thorough view of the states’ position within the federation. There is no direct prohibition for seceding, but perhaps some would cite the portion of the Constitution in Article IV, Section 3, as an oblique denial of a state’s right to leave the federation. The clear reality is that for many decades the federal government has violated the Constitution, thus abdicating any contractual claim it may advance to prevent a state from leaving the federation.

Based on our last column (A Salvation Message) which discussed nullification as a means for states to resist unconstitutional federal power, secession is an option only if the state has diligently and consistently attempted to thwart excessive federal intervention via nullification. There are practical problems associated with this progression of response: 1) the state legislature must nullify because if they do not, then it seems rather logical that the political will to secede will not be present; 2) if the state does employ nullification against every instance of federal power abuse, there is no guarantee that the federal government will honor the individual state’s right to withdraw from the federation. We could have a flashback to 1861. The confrontation might be avoided, however, if the state refrained from occupying constitutional federal property such as military installations. One of the most important mitigating factors is that the federal government has become a self-perpetuating entity that seeks to command the states rather than serve them. The feds would, therefore, enforce their own preservation interests even if they did not have the support and acquiescence of the states that remained in the union. It has become a circular conundrum. A state secedes because the federal government exceeds its mandate, and the federal government in turn employs force to require the state to yield to its power and authority.

Although the secession remedy appears as the third alternative in this four-part series, it may be the most difficult to implement. Most states and their political leaders lack the will. If the federal government responds with all the power that it has available, the state may be incapable of any meaningful resistance. On the face of it secession is a lose-lose strategy. Achieving overwhelming support for leaving the union within any given state is probably impossible. A remnant of liberty loving patriots can resist an out-of-control federal government, but to marshal the citizens of an entire state is unlikely. Too many people will watch “American Idol” while the resistance is battling for freedom.
